Redefining Marriage – Does God Approve of Gay Marriage?

On June 26th, 2015, a court of nine unelected men and women made a decision that would forever change the moral fabric of America – a decision that should not have been handed to the Supreme Court to decide.  Sadly, a federal decree was signed.  We saw people celebrating and proudly displaying the rainbow flag, showing their support for same-sex marriage.  However, I did not share in their enthusiasm.  Just as when Pandora’s box was opened, we cannot put it all back in, nothing will ever be the same.  Many feel that this decision has opened the door to a potential wave of immorality.  It is important to remember that the Supreme Court justices, although ordinary men and women, hold lifetime positions and their judgments can shape the lives of future generations.  Out of nine Supreme Court justices, four of them got it right.

What Does God Say?

In the Bible, we see homosexuality condemned as an immoral and abnormal.  In the Old Testament we see the homosexual act as an abomination, a detestable sin (Leviticus 18:22).  In the New Testament, we see homosexual actions and desires to be shameful and unnatural (Romans 1:26-27).  Furthermore, we see a weighty warning that homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9).   Therefore, God makes it pretty clear that homosexuality is condemned; it would then follow that marrying someone of the same sex is not God’s will for mankind and has eternal repercussions.

Marriage

Throughout the Bible there are countless mentions of marriage, each one celebrating the beautiful union between a man and a woman.  The first mention of marriage (Genesis 2:24), describes it as a man leaving his parents and being united to his wife.  God Himself meticulously designed marriage to be a holy bond, a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, a loving and nurturing sanctuary where families can thrive in a stable environment.  The union of a man and a woman is found in every human civilization in world history.  God uniquely created a woman to complement a man in every way: psychologically, emotionally, and anatomically (and vice versa).   The natural purpose of this sacred union is blessed with procreation and only a sexual relationship between a man and a woman can fulfill this purpose.  (1 Corinthians 7:2-16).  Additionally, there are strong, logical arguments against same-sex marriage apart from the Bible. One does not have to be a Christian to recognize that marriage should be between a man and a woman.   .

The Truth

Everyone inherently knows same-sex marriage is wrong.  God has made the truth plain (Romans 1:18-32).  We have suppressed the truth and replaced it with a lie.  One way to suppress the truth is to normalize homosexuality and cancel those who oppose it.  A good way to normalize homosexuality is to place same-sex marriage on an equal footing with traditional marriage.

In summary, same-sex marriage is a perversion of the institution of marriage and offense to our creator; God created the idea of marriage.  As a Christian, we do not condone sin, nor should we ignore sin.

What Can We Do?

We should share God’s love with others, pointing them to God’s forgiveness of sins.  Forgiveness is available to everyone.  Be reminded that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.  Speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).  Always be prepared to give an answer to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that you have.

“Always be prepared to give an answer to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15

Pray for those who struggle with same-sex attraction that their eyes will be opened to truth.  Pray that we stop turning our back on God, as He can remove His hand of protection at any time.  Pray that more godly Supreme Court justices are nominated, that is the only way we prevent these things from happening.   May God have mercy on us.
